When Mat Kitahara (CEO of Mecan Imaging Inc., and Mecan USA Inc.) retired from Polaroid where he spent most of his career, he was 50 years old with 3 children who have yet to graduate from college.
His future looked bleak to everyone around him. However, contrary to the gloomy atmosphere surrounding society at large, Mat was absolutely positive about his days ahead of him. Instead of trying to get hired by another company, he jumped on the bandwagon, and started his own internet retail company.
It was 1999. The time was right. After a few critical years in which the company could have gone bankrupt at any moment, the fledgling company started to show signs of growth. Now in 2011, Mecan Imaging has become one of the major microscopy internet retail companies in Japan.
Now Mat's journey continues. Responding to the frequent contact from potential oversees customers, Mat decided to establish Mecan USA Inc in California, the place where he spent his youth back in the 70's and considers it to be his second home.
And today Mecan USA Inc. announced the new web site dedicated to US customers.
